TYPICAL PROJECT WORK STAGES

An architect can provide a range of services.   For a building project, these include investigating the feasibility of the requirements, developing design proposals, applying for statutory approvals, preparing construction information, obtaining tenders for building work, and administering a building contract.

As well as a full service as outlined below, the architect might be engaged initially for exploratory services to help determine the optimum way to achieve the objectives, or to carry out specific activities such as preparing a planning application.   Such an appointment can be varied to include further services if required.

Design and construction typically proceeds through a number of ‘Work Stages’.   The RIBA has summarised these into a ‘Plan of Work’ as outlined below:

A Appraisal Identification of client’s requirements and possible constraints on development.

B Strategic Briefing Preparation of Strategic Brief, by or on behalf of the client.
